I overpaid social security taxes because I worked for 2 separate employers in 2017. How can I confirm that Turbo Tax is calculating this refund properly?

I don't see it anywhere

If you enter your 2 forms W-2 in TurboTax, the amount of excess social security tax withheld will be calculated by TurboTax and included as a credit on your tax return (line 71 of form 1040). You will not receive a separate refund.

To check that this credit is on your form 1040, you can preview this form by following these steps:

  • In TurboTax, open your return
  • In the left-hand column, locate Tax Tools, click on the drop-down arrow then click on Tools
  • On the Tools Center page, click on View Tax Summary
  • In the left-hand column, click on Preview my 1040
  • Your form 1040 will display.
  • Scroll down to line 71 and you should see the amount of the excess social security withheld

I'm having this issue with 2021 filing.  I hit the max with my primary job and had about $178 withheld from my part time teaching.  The error I get says that the primary job was overwithheld by $178 and I should request a refund from my employer.  But each employer withheld the right amount.  I can't find where any of this is recorded in the forms or anywhere I can manually correct this.

Delete the W2s and re enter them.   That may clear something out.   You did enter each W2 separately?  Do they have the same EIN on them?

The EINs were entered as the same, so I corrected that and the problem went away!  THANK YOU
